Ought to

Is there a good way to categorize bodies? What do the categories tell us? The categories tell us more about the need to categorize bodies than about the bodies themselves.
Judith Battler

Ought to is a research part of an ongoing process (work in progress). The central theme of the project concerns the stereotypical performances of gender and in particular gestures that perform femininity.
As Candace West and Don Zimmermann point out, both women and men "do" gender, and their ability as members of a society depends on their ability to on this production. The performance highlights the stereotypical gestures that traditionally characterize female or feminine behavior as repetitive performances by male dancers. The research focuses on understanding the process that incorporates activities with a specific aim in production of gender as masculine or feminine 'nature'. The aim is to questions on the categorizations of gender and bodies and to reflect on the necessity of these categorizations.
